With Freddy Krueger slashing up the competition this past weekend and hauling in the largest opening for an Elm Street film, it was pretty much a certainty that a sequel would be in the offing. I just didnt' think it would be this soon.
Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema have already greenlit a sequel to the film, to be shot and released in 3-D.
Dan Fellman, Warner Brothers prez of Distribution had this to say...
"We don't have a story yet, but this is the largest horror opening in the April-May corridor, and it just proves there's a lot left in the franchise,"
It doesn't sound as if director Samuel Bayer will be coming back, though. He's expressed in the past his lack of interest in continuing on, choosing to court the job of helming Garth Ennis' THE BOYS when the time rolls around.
I'm not so sure I agree with Fellman on this one. Sure, Elm Street got off to a reasonably strong start, but what's going to matter his how it holds up. I'm betting that when everything shakes out, the final tally won't be nearly as impressive as WB/New Line though. It's still making a profit, but merely making a profit hasn't stopped other sequels from dying recently. Just look at Zoolander 2 and Anchorman 2.
