- $134M The question was never if Iron Man 2 would be the top dawg during it's debut weekend, but by just how much would it improve on Iron Man's $98M opening. As it turns out, it did pretty darn well, clocking in the 5th best opening weekend of all-time, as well as breaking Star Trek's record for IMAX opening weekends. Hefty competition is on the horizon, though, with Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe's Robin Hood taking aim this weekend.
2. A Nightmare on Elm Street
- $9.17M/$48.5M Freddy's razor sharp claws don't stand a chance against a guy in armor, as last week's champeen got trounced, falling over 70%. In retrospect, debuting a week before Iron Man was probably a good idea, giving Platinum Dunes atleast one weekend to shine before falling off the radar.
3. How to Train Your Dragon
- $6.76M/$201M After getting off to a slow start, HTTYD has showed remarkable shelf life and is now on the verge of becoming Dreamworks highest grossing animated film. Other than Shrek
, of course.4. Date Night
- $5.3M/$80.9M 5. The Back-Up Plan
- $4.34M/$29.4M So much for the Jennifer Lopez comeback. I'm very happy to see that people are turning to the reliable duo of Carell/Fey for their comedy fix than this grating, irritating crapfest.
6. Furry Vengeance
- $4M/$11.6M Studio exit polling suggests that 99.9% of the audience were PETA members just making sure no animals were harmed. To their enjoyment, they found out that only comedy was brutally beaten to a pulp.
7. Clash of the Titans
- $2.31M/$158M 8. Death at a Funeral
- $2.1M/$38.3M 9. The Losers
- $1.8M/$21.4M How badly did this one tank? Good jeebus.
10. Babies- $1.58M
As a bit of counter-programming, Focus Features' Babies got off to a decent start at only 534 theaters. Exit polling suggests that babies are far more entertaining when they belong to somebody else and you can just walk away from them after 90 minutes without looking back.
