Ok, so I'm not wrong quite yet. Last month, a
rumor was reported that Robert Rodriguez(
Sin City
) was in early talks with 20th Century Fox to direct
Deadpool
, the Ryan Reynolds X-men spinoff about the wise cracking mercenary. I said at the time that I doubted anything would come of it, but now the
LA Times is reporting that the two sides are in active negotiations, meaning the liklihood is that Rodriguez will snag the gig.
Rodriguez had been sent the script by
Zombieland
co-writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Currently in the process of shooting Spy Kids 4, Deadpool would have to wait at least until that is completed before anything can begin. I'm also going to assume that this will be yet another project that pushes back Sin City 2.
This isn't a done deal yet, but it's looking like it's going to happen. In a perfect situation, it's a near flawless match. Rodriguez loves big action and wacky situations, which is what Deadpool is all about. However, this will be a studio film, and Rodriguez likely won't have the freedom he's accustomed to. I can't wait to see how this turns out, and what direction the entire production takes with him at the helm.
