Right off the bat, my head is spinning at the idea that Burlesque was nominated as often as it was! Even in the musical department that was one seriously lacking flick. But then to see it nominated for Best Picture in a musical or comedy seriously undervalues the entire award. I have to admit part of me is happy to see Red get nominated, but surely there were better films than that to choose from? Or is this their way of giving it a best ensemble nomination since that category doesnt' exist?
As you'd expect I'm very happy to see Jacki Weaver getting so much love for Animal Kingdom. Truly the most terrifying performance I saw all year. Melissa Leo is deserving also.
Johnny Depp nominated twice for roles he could've done in his sleep and I'm relatively certain that he did! That whole category is a joke. Nobody's seen Barney's Version other than Paul Giamatti. Kevin Spacey is good at playing Kevin Spacey in Casino Jack. Jake Gyllenhall is completely overshadowed in every way by Anne Hathaway in Love and Other Drugs. Terrible options.
Angelina Jolie's nomination for The Tourist should've been for "Best Glamorous Eye Candy", not for acting. You can make a valid case for everybody else on that list.
No Daft Punk nomination for Best Original Score? Come now. Then again I can't complain since we at WAFCA didn't get a chance to see it in time to judge it.
The Golden Globes are notoriously hard for me to predict. As you can see the nominations are a bit wooly, but here I go with who I hope will come away with the victory...
