A recent partnership between Miramax and The Weinstein Company has set in motion the possibility of sequels to a number movies from the old Miramax catalogue. Films that have absolutely no business ever being touched again are on the block, with the first proposed sequels to include Bad Santa, Shakespeare in Love, and Rounders. Ahhh, Rounders. How I love you so. Why must they do these things to me?
With Billy Bob Thornton recently discussing his desire to star in a sequel to Bad Santa, there's no clue whether this deal will have any effect on that. This deal actually augments a deal the two studios had in place already, so this will probably increase the odds that we'll see a follow-up to the 2003 Christmas hit sooner rather than later.
Other titles said to be in consideration are sequels to Clerks(that would be Clerks 3), Swingers, Bridget Jones's Diary(another 3rd), Cop Land(seriously??), Shall We Dance?, The Amityville Horror and yet another From Dusk Til Dawn. The deal also includes the possibility of live-action television series to be developed based on these films.
You can't mention Clerks without Kevin Smith somehow being involved. He recently stated that he might be up for a third and final film featuring Dante and Randal. So maybe there's a chance we'll get that now.
Expect a few of these to be direct-to-DVD "cheapquels", as I like to call them. In particular From Dusk til Dawn and Swingers, which skew much younger and can be easily cast with relative unknowns. I don't really want to see sequels to any of these movies(except Bad Santa), but I guess it was bound to happen. Shakespeare in Love, though? That one has to be a joke. That'd be like making a sequel to The Cider House Rules....or did I just spoil the next story?
