A remake of Stephen King's 'Firestarter' is in the works

There are three things you can pretty much count on in life: death, taxes, and Stephen King novels being turned into movies.  Back in the 1980s it seemed like pretty much everything he wrote ended up on screens at some point. A lot of those adaptations turned out to be pretty good. A good number of them were crapola. One of the ones that people tend to forget that I really liked was Firestarter, about a young girl with pyrokinetic ability being hunted down by the government. The film was released back in 1984 and starred a post-E.T. Drew Barrymore.

Now Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures is looking to remake the film with the possibility of turning it into a franchise. Stephen King has long stated that his desire to turn Firestarter into a comic book series, but as of now there's no indication of his involvement. The script is being drafted by Mark L. Smith(Vacancy), with the idea to reinvent the lead character with "more edge".  Ugh. I hate that cliched term.

A 2002 "sequel" mini-series aired on SyFy back in 2002 titled Firestarter 2: Rekindled, which co-starred Dennis Hopper and Malcolm McDowell.
