The biggest, most glamorous(read:expensive) project on the block has to be Sony and Scott Rudin's planned 3D Cleopatra biopic. Based on Stacy Schiff's revisionist novel, Cleopatra: A Life, Angelina Jolie has been rumored to be attached since day one. Initially James Cameron was looking to direct until he committed himself to his Avatar sequels. Then Paul Greengrass(United 93) was in consideration, but he's now doing Memphis. A production this big needs a big hand in control of it, so where can Sony turn?
According to Deadline, David Fincher is next on their list. Scheduling would be the main roadblock. Deadline says he's expected to helm the sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, although I'm not sure that's confirmed yet. Fincher's never done a sequel before, and probably wont commit until the first film is out the door.
I can't see Fincher taking on something this big. Not now. He's got enough big projects possibly in the works(20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) to keep him plenty busy.
