Back in 2008, Lorene Scafaria wrote one of my favorite films of that year, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, about two people finding love just as their lives were really starting to take off. Now Scaria is set to write and make her directorial debut with a film that is almost the polar opposite, and she's bringing Steve Carell and Keira Knightley along with her. The film is Seeking a Friend For the End of the World, and believe it or not it's a romantic comedy set in a time when an incoming asteroid is doomed to end all of humanity. Sounds like fun, right?
Deadline notes that Carell would play a husband who finds himself alone when his wife rushes off in a panic. His high school sweetheart sends him a letter stating that she wants them to be together when the world ends. Knightley would be his neighbor tagging along on the road trip, and I'm going to assume love blossoms along the way.
Honestly, I think this sounds fantastic. For one, the upcoming disaster should only heighten the urgency, making every emotional moment more intense. And if anyone can make something like the end of the world funny, it's Carell. I'm expecting a healthy dose of gallows humor.
