The Sunday Drive: 4/3/11

3. Insidious
Who says you need tons of blood and gore to make a scary, bone rattling horror? The makers of Saw prove they're just as adept at portraying mental torture as they are with the physical. Insidious has many of the same trappings as classic films like Poltergeist and The Entity, but with a morn modern, unique twist.
2. Win Win
Paul Giamatti is a lovable, misguided patriarch who takes in the grandson of a client and sees his entire world turned upside down in the latest film from the brilliant Tom McCarthy.

1. Source Code
Duncan Jones proves that 2009's Moon was no fluke as he steers Jake Gyllenhaal through a dynamic, body jumping thrill ride full of Hitchcockian twists that will leave you guessing and hanging onto your seat. The action event of the year is here!

DVD Pick of the Week: Black Swan
Tough decision this week whether to go with Black Swan or Doug Liman's compelling political thriller, Fair Game. Ultimately the whirling frenzy whipped up by Darren Aronofsky and the ballsy Natalie Portman had to win out. Black Swan is a film I've seen multiple times now, and yet my desire to rewatch it and get sucked up into this frantic, crazy ballet world never wanes. Part of that reason is Portman's masterful performance as Nina, a prima ballerina struggling cut loose in her rendition of Swan Lake. But the biggest reason why I can't let this film go is the insane tightrope Aronofsky walks. Black Swan is always just a step away from topping into complete schlock, until finally it gives in and accepts the insanity it had been fighting all along. When it does happen, it's like a veil or a curtain has been lifted. A remarkable achievement.
