David O. Russell bales on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Apparently everyone's suddenly come down with Sarah Palin Disorder and started quitting their most high profile gigs. After Albert Hughes high tailed it from Akira, now comes word from Deadline that David O. Russell has decided not to write and direct Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the adaptation of the wildly popular video game. He had been hired for the job in October of last year after a ton of indecisiveness.

Kinda odd since so much work had gone into this thing already. Frequent cohort Mark Wahlberg(I Heart Huckabees, The Fighter), was set to star as treasure seeker Nathan Drake in the adventure film, with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci attached as members of his family. The script appeared to be nearly complete, but in recent months O. Russell has seen his name attached to a myriad of other projects. It's looking like one of those may have squashed his interest in Uncharted.

The most likely culprit is long in development The Silver Linings Playbook, which also has Wahlberg set to star. Based on the novel by Matthew Quick, the story revolves around a delusional high school teacher released into the custody of his mom, and proceeds to try and win back his ex-wife. At one point in the film's lengthy process, Bradley Cooper and Anne Hathaway were attached.

I never played Uncharted, but the rantings from some of it's hardcore fans over the hiring of Wahlberg was like an annoying buzzing in my ears. With O. Russell gone, Wahlberg will likely go with him, leaving the door open for Sony to pick somebody else. Nathan Fillion, maybe? That's who everybody wants, right?
