Thanks to the good folks over at Cinema Blend for the heads up on this, though I do warn you to take it with a giant grain of salt (I gotta look up where that expression comes from!) as the source isn't named and nothing official has been said at this extremely early junction.
From the looks of it the strong second week and smash international box office numbers Thor 2 is a go, but not until after The Avengers hits. The word is that it will be released summer 2013 to coincide with Iron Man 3. If there's any truth to this it may be a bit of brilliance, releasing the origin story now and then allowing The Avengers to build on the character before releasing the sequel will likely allow the God of Thunder to build more of a fan base. My only wonder is how they will wrap up the loose ends of this summers installment without taking up a decent chunk of The Avengers. I think the way Iron Man 2 ended was perfect for a group movie setup, all of our heroes should be in contact with Nick Fury before the end of their solo films. This way no time is lost on 'Avengers'....hell a perfect opening scene would be the team being called together for the first time. I'm sure Marvel has already laid out a road map for Avengers but I honestly don't know how they properly make this movie with a 2hr run time. They haven't done me wrong so far so I'll keep the faith....at least until Chris Evans' Captain America hits theaters on July 22nd (can someone explain why this isn't going out on July 4th? Just seems like the obvious move).
Back to Thor...CB is also stating that the primary villains for the next film have already been chosen and they are The Enchantress and The Executioner!!! .....Don't worry I have no clue who they are either so I'll just quote their description:
In Marvel Comics lore The Enchantress is a powerful Asgard sorceress named Amora. In the comics her first appearance involved an attempt to take out Thor’s love interest in order to have him all to herself. That notion seems to fit pretty well with where the first movie left us. When last we saw him Thor was pining for, and obviously head over heels in love with, Natalie Portman’s Jane. Eventually he’ll have to bring her to court, and that’s going to piss a lot of Asgardians off. Loki could figure in here, if Tom Hiddleston’s character returns, since in the comics he helps Amora seduce Thor.
The Executioner is a character closely tied to The Enchantress. He’s in love with her, and she manipulates him into doing her dirty work. He’s a warrior and easily manipulated. Toying with him could be fun for Loki too.
So, there you have it. Thanks again to CinemaBlend for the heads up, and if you haven't seen Thor yet get your ass in a theater seat pronto!!
