Trailer Time: The Muppets, starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams
One of the biggest disapointments from the Pirates of the Caribbean screening I attended wasn't just the film, but that we saw like four trailers beforehand(a rarity) and that none of them were for The Muppets. Fortunately I didn't have to wait too much longer for it, as Disney has released the first teaser for the film, and frankly it's a little odd. Check it out below...
I don't know what they were trying to accomplish with that whole faux rom-com bit, but it doesn't add anything for me. The star of the show here is The Muppets, so wasting our time with a minute of junk isn't going to put this film into my good graces. Once Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the gang show up it's pretty much a whirlwind of music, dancing, and bad jokes. I'm not sure how to feel about this yet, other than to say that Fozzie's voice sounds all wrong, but it is good to see the gang back together again. It's been far too long.
Something about The Muppets hasn't quite connected with me, which is why I've barely mentioned it on the site. As a kid I loved it, but even knew that a good deal of the humor was too grown up for me to understand. Now that I'm older and realize just how subversive the whole thing was, I fear that this film will be dumbed down in some way. I know that featuring cameos like Lady Gaga and Danny Trejo should cure my worries, but it doesn't. We'll just have to wait and see how this pans out.
PLOT
On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. With secret, signature, celebrity cameos, “The Muppets” hits the big screen Nov. 23, 2011.
