In case you haven't noticed, the seemingly daily casting of the two dozen Tribute characters in Gary Ross's The Hunger Games has been relegated to "Sure Shots" patrol here on this site. With the exception of Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, the vast majority of them are people none of us could pick out if we had a gun to our heads. But here we are with a bit of casting news that features somebody you might've actually heard of, which means it's for one of the adult characters.
Wes Bentley, who most will recognize as the weirdo leaf filming guy from American Beauty, has been cast as Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane. Crane is responsible for running the 74th Hunger Games, which sees Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark fighting for their lives in a brutal competition against kids from other districts. Woody Harrelson had been rumored for the part just last week, and while I've yet to reach any meaty parts with Seneca in the book, I can't help but think that Harrelson would be a better addition. Maybe he can play another role?
As for Bentley, he's an actor that I lump in a group with a guy like Jim Sturgess. He's in a number of movies I really like, but he's yet to make a real impression on me. He'll next be seen in There Be Dragons, which hits DC tomorrow. I saw it earlier this week and again Bentley failed to impress me. Maybe a smaller but important role in a big movie like this will help change my opinion of him.
The Hunger Games is due out in theaters on March 23rd 2012.
