When I see the words "Disney" and "gargoyles" in the same sentence, my mind immediately flashes back to the great animated series they produced in the 90s. The premise was simple but cool in execution: a clan of gargoyles who turned to stone during the day but would come alive at night to do battle with the evil billionaire industrialist, David Xanatos. The series ran originals for three years, I believe, before continuing on in reruns to this day. As much as I'd like for this new gargoyles film Disney has in the works to be based on that, sadly it isn't.
David Elliot and Paul Lovett(G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) will script an original film for Disney revolving around the world of gargoyles. The stone figures atop the city buildings would still come to life, but they'll be portrayed as guardians for the cities they reside in. Actually, it doesn't sound all that different from the cartoon afterall.
With Lauren Shuler Donner(X-men franchise) producing, Disney has eyes on this one becoming a major franchise, including theme park rides, TV shows, and video games. Donner's specialty is in putting together mainstream tentpole flicks, so I would expect this one to be pretty family friendly. I'm sensing a Night at the Museum vibe coming from this. [Variety]
