Trailer Time: The Thing, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton

Well this is a surprise. Not that we've got a trailer for the remake of The Thing, but that it actually doesn't look as bad as I imagined. Directed by Dutch filmmaker Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the film is a prequel introducing us to the classic movie monster John Carpenter unleashed back in 1982. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who has shown how tough she can be already in Death Proof and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, is a researcher at an Antarctic base where an alien is discovered buried in ice. Bad things happen. You know the drill.

.......................oops, sorry. Still drooling over Winstead.  I can admit that most of what's provided here looks like pretty basic horror thriller stuff, but when your expectations are low sometimes just appearing competent is enough. The special effects, which were bolstered by reshoots and an injection of extra cash, look solid. Hopefully the next trailer will provide us a bit more to judge.  Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen(dead), and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje(definitely dead) round out the primary cast.

The Thing opens in theaters on October 14th.
