How does a film with Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hayden Panettiere sit on the shelf for three years before finally being released basically in secret? Very easily, apparently. That's the case with Fireflies in the Garden, a rather sappy looking drama that premiered at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival but hasn't been heard from since.
The film centers on three generations of the Taylor family, with Dafoe and Roberts playing the parents of Ryan Reynolds. Seriously. Doesn't seem feasible, does it? Whatever, this looks like your token familial squabbling flick with a terrible tragedy baked inside. A new trailer has been released for it, and I think I can see why it's been laying around for awhile. Overwrought, overly serious, overreaching for an Oscar.
