1st look at Frankenweenie, directed by Tim Burton

For a filmmaker with as unique an artistic vision as Tim Burton, he's been remarkably limited by the fact he does nothing but adaptations. The last original work from him was 2005's stop-motion Corpse Bride, and it was probably the freakiest thing we've seen from him yet. It's just not often enough that we have the opportunity to see what Burton can do when left totally up to his own devices, but later next year we'll get that opportunity with the release of Frankenweenie.

Based on Burton's acclaimed 1984 short film, the story centers on a young Dr. Frankenstein, who brings back to life his beloved dog after it's hit by a car. Strange, a little gross, but likely with a lot of heart as well. Entertainment Weekly has a story on the film, along with a couple of new images which you can check out below....

Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau and Winona Ryder provide the voicework. Frankenweenie is expected to hit theaters on October 5th 2012.
