Captain America sequel to take place in modern time

Captain America: The First Avenger might not have been the biggest superhero hit this summer, but it's $365M haul was enough to send Marvel scurrying back to writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to start drafting the sequel. The greatest thing working for the character, in my opinion, was it's setting back in the days of WWII, something no other character on the Marvel movie roster can match. But as anyone who saw the film knows, the Captain was thawed out in our time so he can be a part of The Avengers, along with fellow heroes Thor, Iron Man, and The Hulk. But does that mean his sequel will take place in modern times as well?

The answer is yes, and frankly it's always been yes. The writing duo has been saying since as far back a April that the sequel would likely take place in the present, and talking to the HD Room about the upcoming DVD release of the film, they confirm it....

“I think it’s safe for us to say that it’s primarily set in the modern day. That seems to have been the biggest question people have been wondering about regarding the sequel,” said McFeely. “Most people know the story of Captain America as the story of this man out of time, and because ‘The Avengers’ is such a big movie, and because [Avengers director] Joss Whedon has so many moving pieces, we’ve been left with room to explore Cap entering the modern day wondering, ‘What is all this? What’s happened to the world.’ And so on.”

Turns out those "fish out of water" stories are the ones I always hated the most in the Captain America comics. Oh well.  So much for the hope of seeing Cap and The Invaders, or more of the Howling Commandos. Unless it's in flashback, I guess.

The Captain America: The First Avenger DVD/Blu-Ray will hit store shelves on October 25th. The Avengers assembles into theaters on May 4th 2012.
