Peter Jackson to direct The Adventures of Tintin sequel, Prisoners of the Sun

As far as we can tell based on the many images and breathtaking trailers, the powerhouse union of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson has taken the art of motion capture to new heights in The Adventures of Tintin. Based on the comics of Belgian artist Herge, Tintin is more of an interntational figure than he is here in the States, and so it'll be interesting to see just how the box office pans out. The initial plan was always to have Spielberg helm the first film, with Jackson taking over the 2nd, and the final leg of the trilogy undecided. It'll likely depend on how the numbers shake out. With the film due to open globally tomorrow, we'll have a pretty good idea of the financials before it hits theaters here on December 21st.

Speaking to THR, Jackson confirmed what was always suspected, that he will indeed direct the sequel. after he's wrapped up work on The Hobbit. Tentatively titled Prisoners of the Sun, Anthony Horowitz(Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker), was hired last fall to write the screenplay. Although the film hasn't been officially greenlit yet, Horowitz has already completed the script and storyboard work has begun.

The sequel will be a combination of two Tintin adventures, The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun, in which Tintin and Captain Haddock investigate the mysterious illness afflicting seven explorers who recently unearthed an Incan tomb.

Don't expect to see it anytime soon, as both Jackson and Spielberg have full dance cards for the next year. Jackson with both The Hobbit flicks, and Spielberg with his Abe Lincoln biopic and Robopocalypse afterwards.
