Sure Shots: Eli Roth; 'Despicable Me 2'; Mark Ruffalo

* Horror maven Eli Roth will be lending his name's considerable weight as producer, co-writer, and star of Aftershock, a film set in the aftermath of awful 8.8 earthquake that devastated Chile in 2010. Directed by Nicolás López, who also co-wrote with Guillermo Amoedo, the film has a bunch on inmates from an asylum busting free after the disaster and I'm assuming causing some major havoc. In the most surprising twist, Selena Gomez will make a cameo appearance. Let's hope she's tarting it up a little bit or something. The film is already four weeks into production, so it may not be long before this turns up in theaters. [Deadline]

* Al Pacino has replaced Javier Bardem as the villain voice in Despicable Me 2, the sequel to 2010's hit animated film featuring Steve Carell. The original film followed a supervillain named Gru, who slowly turned to the side of good after warming up to three adorable orphans who were initially part of one of his schemes. The sequel's plot is less clear, but Bardem was initially to voice a character named El Macho. That appears to be off the table now, as Deadline has no information on who Pacino's character will be. As long as those awesome yellow minions are around, then it's almost certain the sequel will be as fun as the original. Despicable Me 2 is set to open on July 3rd 2013.

* Back in June we learned about the next film from John Carney, the director of the unforgettable musical romance, Once. Titled Can A Song Save Your Life, the film stars Scarlett Johansson and at one point was looking at her colleague in The Avengers, Mark Ruffalo, and Jim Carrey as possible stars. Well now Ruffalo is confirmed for the film, about a woman who moves to New York with her boyfriend to pursue their dream of hitting it big in the music industry. However when he dumps her for a chance at solo glory, she's left to fend for herself until she's discovered by a down on his luck record producer. Obviously, this sounds perfect for Carney, who also wrote the script. Judd Apatow is on board to produce, and with two big stars like Ruffalo and Johansson, I expect to be hearing much more from this film.
