'Miss Bala' director gets Michael Fassbender to lead his follow-up, 'The Mountain Between Us'
It didn't take long for Michael Fassbender to become Hollywood heartthrob, even though he's done very few romances. Jane Eyre is probably the one and only real example, and the word "smoldering" has been thrown around on this site(by me, of course) to describe his performance in it. Primarily he's stuck to tentpoles like X-men: First Class and the upcoming Prometheus to build his rep. A film like Shame, while very sexual, is pretty much the exact opposite of romantic.
He'll get another shot to make women's knees weak as the lead in The Mountain Between Us, based on the romance novel by Charles Martin and directed by Gerardo Naranjo(Miss Bala). The story sounds like it has potential be like Six Days, Seven Nights, if that sort of thing floats your boat. Fassbender will play Ben, a doctor who meets Ashley Knox, a woman headed out on a flight east for her wedding. When the flight is cancelled, they charter their own flight only to have the pilot suffer a heart attack and the plane crashing into the High Uintas wilderness. Stranded and injured along with the pilot's dog(seriously), Ben and Alex must battle the elements and the harsh terrain to get back to civilization. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that they fall in love somewhere along the way?
Fassbender already has Ridley Scott's The Counselor coming up next. At some point this year he'll have Twelve Years A Slave, with Brad Pitt, Chiwetel Ejiafor, and director Steve McQueen. So where this film fits in is anybody's guess right now. [Variety]
