Stellan Skarsgard and Hiroyuki Sanada join 'The Railway Man'

A shame that we'll probably never get to see Jonathan Treplitzky's acclaimed festival drama, Burning Man, here in the United States. It features one of Matthew Goode's finest performances, and Treplitzky shows a deft hand behind the camera as well. His follow-up feature, The Railway Man, will most definitely turn up here, as it already sports the talents of Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, and Jeremy Irvine.

The latest additions to the cast are the always welcome Stellan Skarsgard(Melancholia), and Hiroyuki Sanada(The Last Samurai). Based on a script by Frank Cottrell Boyce, the film is based on Eric Lomax's memoir, of his time as a British Army officer capture during WWII and sent to a Thailand POW camp. There he helped build the railway near the infamous bridge over the River Kwai, and suffered numerous tortures and indignities in the process. Years later he would be convinced by his wife to find closure by seeking out his former captors.  Skarsgard will play a friend of Lomax's who accompanies him on his journey, while Sanada is a Japanese officer from the prison camp.

Filming should begin soon in both Thailand and Australia. Skarsgard will be seen later this week as part of Marvel's The Avengers, while Sanada will star with Keanu Reeves in 47 Ronin. [Variety]
