The Sunday Drive: 4/29/12

3. The Five-Year Engagement
Jason Segel and Emily Blunt bring their magical, charming personalities together for a romantic comedy that is both classy and silly at the same time. Although it's a bit uneven and could use some time in the editing room, there are enough funny moments and bits of genuine poignancy to make this a another great film from the team of Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller.

2. Safe
Stop me if you've heard this. Jason Statham plays a former agent with a penchant for trouble and breaking a few skulls. Nothing new for Statham, for sure, but Safe is undeniably the best film he's made in years. Unpredictable both in story and the level of violence, we also get to see Statham's sensitive side as his character protects a girl genius from the Chinese Triads, the Russian mob, and an entire squad of corrupt cops.
1. Sound of My Voice
Without an ounce of special effects to lean on as a crutch, Brit Marling and director  Zal Batmanglij have crafted an intense, haunting sci-fi thriller that will stick with you for long after it's over. Two investigative reports infiltrate a rapidly growing cult in hopes of proving its charismatic leader, a mysterious woman named Maggie who claims to be from the future, as a complete fraud.

DVD Pick of the Week: The Innkeepers
Further proving that Ti West is a horror director of rare ability, The Innkeepers doesn't use blood and score to scare us, but wears down our defenses with humor and subtle mood, providing the tools with which we can freak ourselves out. Sara Paxton and Pat Healy are the final employees remaining at a hotel due to close its doors after a century of service. Before the place shuts down for good, the two young innkeepers decide to investigate the rumors of the place being haunted, and of course, all goes to Hell.
