1st look at Idris Elba in Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim'

Idris Elba is a bad ass, can I just put that out there right now? The guy was straight up fire for three seasons on The Wire as the gangsta businessman, Stringer Bell, and has been lighting up the big screen ever since. Not everybody can make playing an alcoholic warrior monk cool the way Elba did in the Ghost Rider sequel, and certainly not everybody can make a Beyonce/Ali Larter thriller like Obsessed halfway decent. That's really just the half of it, though, as Elba remains a charismatic presence on the small screen in the hit detective series, Luther. Dude can do no wrong right now. With the biggest film of his career in Prometheus opening today, we're getting our first look at the next major event he's got lined up, and...yep, still pretty bad ass.

Total Film has the first image from Pacific Rim, Guillermo Del Toro's big budget monster invasion flick due out in May 2013. He plays General Stacker Pentecost, and apparently that title means he gets to wear one really big, obtrusive suit. Set in the not too distant future, the film follows a group of humans fighting back against a wave of monster attacks from both sides of the pacific rim. Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman, Clifton Collins Jr., Rob Kazinsky, and Max Martini will join in on the action.

Elba is gearing up to return as Heimdall, the guardian of the Bifrost bridge in Thor 2.
