'Independence Day' sequels get new titles; will be converted for 3D

There's still a pretty good chance we'll never see Roland Emmerich's two planned Independence Day sequels, or at the very least they're still quite a ways off. But over the last couple of years we've been hearing more and more from Emmerich and his co-writer/producer Dean Devlin about their plans for them, with the most recent update coming in July that basically just told us that it was going to be a really challenging process.

That appears to still be the case. Emmerich has never been a big fan of 3D, even though his huge world-destroying flicks seem made for it. Talking to the German site Film Starts(via Bleeding Cool), Emmerich revealed he would shoot his Independence Day sequels in 2D, with 20th Century Fox ponying up to have them converted into 3D. Emmerich also noted that between the studio and the actors it's been a "tough battle" making any progress on the films, but they have the "right idea" and will keep moving forward.

The two films are being developed under the working titles of ID Forever Part One and ID Forever Part Two, and Devlin recently spoke to Total Film about his approach this time around....

Devlin: "The thing that really hit me about the movie is how much love there is in it: between the characters; that the filmmakers had making it; that the cast had for each other. As we're approaching a sequel we're focusing on that aspect of it. Because I think that was really the key as to why it worked for everyone. It was lovable."

Did we watch the same movie?  That's not the Independence Day I remember. The one I saw was basically Red Dawn with Will Smith punching aliens. The movie he's talking about sounds like New Year's Eve
