Tops at the Box Office: 'The Possession' wins the worst weekend in years

1. The Possession- $9.5M/$33.3M
It was pretty bad last week when tepid horror film, The Possession, won the weekend after getting off to a middling opening that bested some weak competition. But that was nothing compared to this week, where no film grossed more than $10M leading to the worst box office weekend in four years. Not that the film's producers care one bit, as they've more than doubled their production budget and seem primed for a run that ends with at least $50M in the bank.

2. Lawless- $6M/$23.5M
The hope at this point for The Weinstein Company is that Lawless can dredge up some sort of Oscar recognition and set up a possible theatrical re-release. Right now it's just not looking like a film that's going to make any sort of waves.
3. The Words- $5M
Well, a festival show pony with no action, a confusing premise, and CBS Films' typically bad marketing was never going to perform well and that's exactly what's happened. As much as Bradley Cooper has reinvented himself as a leading man of note, he's still not quite there when it comes to selling something that looks uninteresting on its face. That may work for comedy like Hit & Run which was largely promoted on his name alone, because it looked like there was the possibility of being fun.The Words looked like dreck(it was) and so people stayed home.
4. The Expendables 2- $4.75M/$75.4M
5. The Bourne Legacy- $4M/$103.7M
6. ParaNorman- $3.8M/$45.1M
7.  The Odd Life of Timothy Green- $3.65M/$43M
8. The Campaign- $3.5M/$79.4M
9. The Dark Knight Rises- $3.3M/$437.8M
10. 2016: Obama's America- $3.28M/$26.1M
