Mary Elizabeth Winstead rumored for female lead in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

Currently receiving the best reviews of her career for the alcoholism drama Smashed(review next week), Mary Elizabeth Winstead seems poised for bigger and better things. You already know she's a personal favorite of mine and has been since the teen superhero flick, Sky High, and if the latest rumor is true she may be joining that realm yet again.

Latino Review has heard a rumor that Winstead is up for the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They confirm what I've been saying for months that the role would be for Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter(Hayley Atwell) and a renowned S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in her own right. The names we heard about last week, which included Imogen Poots, Alison Brie, Teresa Palmer, Emilia Clarke, and Jessica Brown Findlay are all in the mix, but it's Winstead who they say "has the most traction". On principle I take everything LR says with a mountain of sodium, so we'll see how this plays out. I still like Palmer for the role, even if Winstead is someone I'll always pay to see. She knows her way around action, having starred in Death Proof and The Thing, making her a natural fit for the Marvel Universe.

The site also says that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau(Game of Thrones) and Josh Holloway(Lost) will be testing for two "physical" roles in the film, presumed to be villains. Kevin Durand(Cosmopolis) is also mentioned as a distant possibility. Whatever happens, we'll see the results when Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens on April 4th 2014.
