With renewed interest in Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren thanks to The Expendables, it's put a lot of attention on their other various projects. One of the most long-lived franchises around is Universal Soldier, which amazingly is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. God I'm old! Anyway, the series has never had more eyes on it than now, and there seems to be a lot of positive buzz surrounding the the newest film, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning.
Due to hit VOD on Thursday October 25th, a new red band trailer has been released which pumps up the violence while also showing some of the psychosis UniSols experience. Fellow 'Expendable' Scott Adkins is a man who wakes from a coma to discover that his family was murdered. Believing that UniSol Luc Devereaux(Van Damme) committed the act, he sets off on a course of revenge.
The production values have gone way up for this installment, blowing away the previous straight-to-DVD flicks that were barely above small screen grade. As I've said before, there's so much potential in the premise that has yet to be reached that hopefully someone will come along and fulfill it. I'm not sure we'll see that in Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, but it looks intense, well-shot, and should deliver the violent sci-fi action fans of the two aging action heroes demand. Expect a review possibly next week, and then look for the film to open theatrically on November 30th.
