Uh oh. Should we be worried? With Drive and the upcoming Only God Forgives under their belts, the pairing of Ryan Gosling and Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn seemed like a match made in heaven, and certainly in the various interviews we've seen the two have come off as a close-knit pair who share the same cinematic vision. That could still be the case, and we may see them collaborate on something in the future, but it won't be in their planned remake of Logan's Run.
Variety's Justin Kroll tweeted the news but neglected to elaborate, merely stating that Gosling is "no longer attached" to the project. It's possible that Gosling's directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster, will take up more of his time than anticipated when filming begins next spring. It's always possible that Warner Bros. is skittish about handing over the keys to a major franchise like this to Gosling, but that's doubtful considering the success they've had with him so far with Crazy Stupid Love and next year's Gangster Squad.
But without any further information it's all just speculation. My gut tells me this is less a personal dispute than it is a timing/scheduling thing. Either way, this is disappointing news. Refn is a dynamic enough filmmaker that he can still make Logan's Run interesting, though.
