Sure Shots: 'Mass Effect'; Clive Owen; Adam Sandler

* Acquired a few years ago by Legendary Pictures, we haven't heard much about their planned adaptation of Mass Effect, Bioware and Electronic Arts' best-selling science fiction video game. The earliest script was provided by Mark Protosevich, but now it's getting a rewrite from newcomer Morgan Davis Foehl. Foehl has never had a screenplay produced, but the studio took a shine to his take on the film, which is set in the year 2183 and follows Commander Shepard and his space-faring crew aboard the SS Normandy. There's still no word on when this could roll, so fans of the franchise may want to check out the animated Mass Effect: Paragon Lost, which comes out this December. [Variety]

*We don't get to see Clive Owen do comedy nearly enough, even though he's proven to be as adept at is as everything else he does. He'll take another stab at it as the lead in The King of the Castle, the directorial debut from writers Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood(The Sitter). Owen will play a philanderer who gets blackmailed by a teenager. No word on when this will roll, but it'll be Owen's first crack at comedy since the underrated Duplicity. [LA Times]

* Paramount's been busy this week. Not only have they picked up the rights to the Tom Cruise sci-fi film, Our Name is Adam, but they've also now entered negotiations to land an upcoming comedy from Adam Sandler. This would be a break from the norm for Sandler, who has seen 15 of his previous box office hits handled through Sony Pictures, so there's no word on why things have suddenly changed. It's certainly been a lucrative arrangement for both. As for the plot of the untitled film? Nobody knows, with the only description that it will fall in the "broad comedy" realm, and will follow Grown Ups 2 which opens next summer. [THR]
