Ed Burns and Doug Atchison team up for hockey biopic 'Turk'

After spending a couple of years focusing on his career behind the camera, Ed Burns' 2012 has seen him honing his acting chops with mixed results. While he was excellent in the underrated Friends with Kids, Man On A Ledge and Alex Cross were pretty pathetic. The next project for the Queens native will see him not only starring but putting on his producer hat for a biopic on Boston Bruins hockey star, Derek "Turk" Sanderson.

Burns will team up with writer/director Doug Atchison(Akeelah and the Bee) for Turk, which will follow Sanderson's troubled career in the late '60s and '70s. Nicknamed "Turk", Sanderson played on the famous 1970 Bruins team that won their first Stanley Cup after an overtime goal by Bobby Orr. The film will chronicle what came after when drugs and alcohol nearly destroyed his life, but was saved thanks to Orr's help.

Burns will play Sanderson's father, while a search for the lead role is currently underway. Sounds like it could be a juicy role for a young actor to make his name on.[Deadline]
