Although the long-awaited trailer for Wong Kar-Wai's martial arts flick The Grandmasters was stunningly beautiful, as all of the famed director's films are, there was just one little problem. It was in Chinese. While normally that's not a problem, and I think the gist was still able to be figured out, this film looks too good to not know for certain. Fortunately someone has taken care of that for us now.
Film Comment's Andrew Chan has translated and subtitled the trailer in English and put it back on the web, so now we know exactly what the heck is going on with master Ip Man(Tony Leung), the real life figure who helped train Bruce Lee along with many other martial arts greats. So now it appears the story will follow Ip Man's ascension within the ranks of the Chinese martial arts association, where he'll battle those who wish to hold him back, while also getting into some romantic entanglements with Zhang Ziyi.
The Grandmasters opens in China on December 18th, and we'll no doubt see it on the festival circuit in 2013.
