Must be the season for international directors to make their English-language debuts, because it's happening all over Hollywood right now. That's a good thing, in my opinion, as we sorely need an injection of fresh ideas and new perspectives. The latest foreign filmmaker to make the jump is Peru's Claudia Llosa(The Milk of Sorrow), and she's bringing along three of my favorite actors to join her.
Jennifer Connelly and Cillian Murphy are set to star in Cry/Fly, with Melanie Laurent(Beginners) in deep negotiations. The film has Connelly as the mother of a terminally ill 6-year old daughter. A dramatic event separates the mother from her daughter and falcon-keeper son(Murphy), and 20 years later a journalist(Laurent) convinces him to seek out his now-famous matriarch. The film is set in Minnesota and northern Canada, covering two time periods.
Despite having heard the praises for The Milk of Sorrow, which was nominated for an Academy Award, I've yet to actually see any of Llosa's work. It might be time to rectify that. Filming is set to begin in February. [Variety]
