Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Batman in 'Justice League'?
Apologies to anyone who hasn't seen The Dark Knight Rises yet, but one of the things that came out of it was this hope that perhaps Christopher Nolan's Batman legacy could continue on with Joseph Gordon-Levitt under the mask. We knew there would be no proper fourth film, and that neither Nolan or Christian Bale would be back, but with JGL revealed at the end to be Robin, and essentially taking over as Gotham City's new protector, the possibility was certainly there.
Months have since passed, and while Warner Bros. preps Man of Steel and then Justice League, the talk of JGL as Batman died down. Talk began of Armie Hammer playing the character in a standalone Justice League film, and generally there was confusion which direction the studio was heading. But recently we've heard Zack Snyder hinting at a shared Avengers-style universe, and now it's sounding like Warner Bros. has settled on something definitive to do with Batman. Hitfix has "sources" reporting that JGL will be appearing in Justice League as Batman, likely building off TDKR's finale. But what's even more interesting is that they say he, and another character from the Nolan-verse, may be appearing even sooner, like in Man of Steel.
This is something Warner Bros. would obviously love to do, as it puts them on an even playing field with Marvel. Christopher Nolan has been pretty clear about not wanting to do superhero stuff anymore, and while he's acting as a producer on Man of Steel, this is probably a studio decision. They could easily have Snyder tack on an epilogue at the end of the film, the same way Marvel did with Iron Man years ago and changed the course of comic book movies forever.
Look, Warner Bros. isn't stupid. All things considered, they could easily find themselves in a better position than Marvel in just a few short years. Justice League will be going head-to-head with The Avengers sequel in 2015, and one way to make sure audiences are more excited for their flick is to build off the foundation Nolan laid. They have the most recognizable heroes in all of the world in Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, now they have to give Justice League a cast worthy of those characters. As much as I love Armie Hammer, he doesn't qualify, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt does. What this also tells me is that Warner Bros. are much further along in their planning than I thought, assuming these rumors hold up. Will Beall began work on the script last year, but we're still waiting to learn who will direct.
So now the big question is this: Do YOU think this is an awesome idea? Do you want to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Batman? Let us know.
