Sure Shots: Andrew Dominik; Susan Boyle; Ben Mendelsohn
* You might recall that before Andrew Dominik decided on Killing Them Softly as his next flick, he had been developing a Marilyn Monroe biopic title Blonde. An adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' book, the film had Naomi Watts circling the lead role, but her participation was in question after the film took a backseat. Now while speaking with ThePlaylist, Dominik has revealed the film is next on his agenda with plans to film next year. Even better, Watts is still attached to play the Hollywood legend, and the story is said to cover her entire life not just a brief episode like My Week With Marilyn.
* A few years ago Susan Boyle was all anybody wanted to talk about. After belting out Les Miserables' 'I Dreamed a Dream' on Britain's Got Talent, the...*ahem*...unconventional...singer was an overnight sensation and her albums have sold millions. Your parents probably adore her. A musical on her life was developed, titled I Dreamed A Dream, and Fox Searchlight have now scooped up the rights to it and to Boyle's life with plans of adapting them for the big screen. There's no talent attached yet, nor a writer or director so this could be a long ways off. Look, I'm not going to lie, I don't think Boyle is all that great. Her appearance shocked folks who thought she'd sound like Shrek gargling glass, but instead she was pretty good. That doesn't mean her story isn't inspiring or wouldn't make for a crowd-pleasing biopic. [Deadline]
* Ryan Gosling isn't looking far in casting up his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster. His Drive co-star, Christina Hendricks, is taking up the lead role in what is being called a dark "fantasy noir". And now Ben Mendelsohn, who appears with Gosling in The Place Beyond the Pines, has signed on for an unspecified part. The story centers on a single mother and her two sons who discover a road leading to a secret underwater town. In order to survive, they're forced to venture into the mysterious place which they've found. [Moviehole]
