John McNaughton to direct Samantha Morton and Michael Shannon in 'The Harvest'
For what it's worth, 1998's Wild Things is something of a modern day classic. A modern day camp classic, but there's merit in even such a thing as that. The film is notable mainly for causing many a teenage boy, and probably quite a few dirty old men, to cream their shorts at the sight of Neve Campbell and Denise Richards making out in a pool. Hot stuff. Matt Dillon had never been so lucky. Ok, so raise your hand if you knew John McNaughton directed the film. Ok, now those of you with your hand up go ahead and put them down, because you're all lying.
McNaughton hasn't directed anything since, but now he's back with a psychological horror titled The Harvest, and he's got a solid pair of actors lined up to star. Samantha Morton(Code 46) and Michael Shannon(Man of Steel) are set to play a married couple with medical backgrounds, who protect their ailing son in a secluded, controlled environment. When a neighbor girl moves in next door and becomes friends with him, the tight-knit world they built for him begins to unravel. Charlie Tahan(Frankenweenie) plays the son, with Leslie Lyles and Meadow Williams co-starring.
Stephen Lancellotti wrote the script, and production is already underway in New York so we may see this one pretty soon. Personally, I'll watch anything Morton does, but pair her up with Shannon and we're talking a potential home run. The wild card is McNaughton, and it'll be interesting to see if this is just the start of a comeback or his career's final gasp. [Variety]
