NY and Boston Film Critics award 'Zero Dark Thirty' top honors; 'Amour' wins in LA
While we here in DC will be announcing the winners of our own awards tomorrow morning, this weekend has seen three other critics' awards handed out, with a few surprises. For Kathryn Bigelow, it was another stellar showing for her Osama Bin Laden film, Zero Dark Thirty, which was awarded Best Picture from both the New York Film Critics Online and the Boston Society of Film Critics, adding to its stellar run which has seen it take home top honors twice already. They both also awarded Bigelow the Best Director award, and in general it was like both groups were reading off the same script. Both agreed to Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor for Lincoln, as well as 85-year old Emmanuelle Riva for Michael Haneke's Amour. The big surprise coming from Boston was the choice of Ezra Miller for his supporting turn in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, beating out runner-up Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association held their LAFCA Awards and they went in a wildly different direction, nearly leaving Zero Dark Thirty off the map completely. The film won a single Best Editing award, while Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, which has been getting ignored for the most part, took home four awards. Anderson won for Best Director, Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor, Amy Adams in Best Supporting Actress, and one for Production Design.
LA also awarded the Best Picture to Amour, and had Riva tying Silver Linings Playbook's Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress. That's three wins in a single weekend for Riva, which has to thrust her right into the thick of the Oscar mix. Beasts of the Southern Wild was well-represented out on the left coast, with Dwight Henry nabbing Best Supporting Actor, director Benh Zeitlin winning the New Generation Award, and taking home one for Best Music.
The full list of winners is below. Tune in tomorrow morning at 8am eastern for the winners of the WAFCA Awards.
