Antoine Fuqua in talks to direct 'The Equalizer'
It's become something of a running gag the number of potential projects sitting on Antoine Fuqua's desk, so many that there's no conceivable way he can tackle them all. There's the Miles Davis biopic; the thriller Storming Las Vegas; a boxing drama titled Southpaw(formerly with Eminem); a Tang Dynasty historical epic; a possible Suge Knight biopic, and there's more waiting for the director to have an open spot in his schedule. But that's not likely to happen as Fuqua keeps adding more, and the latest would see him working with his Training Day star, Denzel Washington.
Fuqua has entered talks to direct the troubled big screen version of 1980s TV series, The Equalizer. The project has Washington set for the title role of a former intelligence officer who seeks to atone for a mysterious past by helping those who are in danger.
Paul Haggis, Nicolas Winding Refn, and most recently Rupert Wyatt have all come and gone from the directing gig, leaving MGM in a tight spot if they want to hit a June production date. Fuqua could be the guy to stick around given his past success with Washington. But at the same time, the studio doesn't seem to be looking very hard for someone to direct the film, meaning they may not have the highest expectations for it.
Fuqua's latest film, Olympus Has Fallen, hits theaters tomorrow.
