New Trailer for 'The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones' Starring Lily Collins

The summer seems like the worst possible time to try and launch a new YA adaptation franchise, especially with so many having failed recently. But that's not stopping The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones from hitting theaters at the tail end of the season, although it has considerably less momentum behind it than Beautiful Creatures or The Host, both of which turned out to be box office disasters. So what does 'Instruments' have to offer that those don't? The latest trailer doesn't do such a good job at answering that question.

If anything, the film does appear to lean more on the side of action than soapy teen romance, but the characters are badly drawn and uninteresting. There's also a cheap quality to the look of it, which may not be a surprise considering the direction by Harald Zwart, not exactly known for his special effects wizardry. Lily Collins plays Clary Fray, a New York girl who learns she comes from a long line of half-angel/half-human Shadowhunters who protect the world from demons. We learn humans are referred to as "Mundanes", Shadowhunters do their fighting at public night clubs, and everything else about it is pretty confusing.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones opens on August 21st.
