Chilean director Sebastian Silva had been at Sundance before, back in 2009 for his acclaimed film, The Maid. Many filmmakers get caught up in the insanity of the festival with just one project to constantly sell, but Silva was pretty chill this year with while doing press for a pair of unconventional films, the psycho-horror Magic Magic and the road trip drug comedy, Crystal Fairy. Basically mirror images of one another, the two films star Michael Cera in roles considerably more aggressive than he's ever been seen, playing an American running roughshod through Chile.
In Crystal Fairy, which is now in theaters everywhere, Cera plays an American ex-pat in Chile on a single-minded journey to locate the San Pedro Cactus and reap its hallucinogenic qualities. He's joined by three brothers (all Silva's real siblings) and Crystal Fairy, a spirited young woman played by Gaby Hoffmann. Some of you may recall that I interviewed Cera, Hoffmann, and Silva back in January, but I was fortunate enough to catch up with Silva again recently and see how his perspective has changed in the months since. We talked about how Crystal Fairy developed, his working relationship with Cera, using the drug mescaline while filming, and much more. Check out the interview below, then find my review of the film here.
