"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Debrief: Episode 1.01, "'Pilot'

So here we go trill believers the beginning of The Marvel Cinematic Universe entering the TV realm and here I am to give you a recap, or better yet a debrief. Even though I’ve been known to be public with my waning interest in the superhero movie genre I told +Travis Hopson  “I got this recap cause I’m 'bout that SHIELD Agent life”. So here we are watching a brand spanking new Joss Whedon network TV series, Agents of SHIELD, which also interest me. So let’s get into this each week as I sit back and try to recap the show, give you "No-Prize" worthy knowledge from the comics universe and speculate how this all connects to the movies that we’ve seen and are going to see this as this season is on.

So the Pilot starts with a voice over of young woman named Skye (Chloe Bennett) as she talks about how the world is now different after the events seen in The Avengers. We see a man named Michael (J. August Richards) with his son. While his son looks at some toys of the Avengers (still not called that in the MCU) an explosion occurs and Michael decides to go and help. There we get a classic hero moment where he uses his super-strength and durability he saves a woman, covering his face with a hoodie. But Skye is there and saw his face and filmed the super heroic act.

Next we meet Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) doing some classic international spy stuff in France when he is pulled away by Maria Hill (yep that’s right the pilot has Robin Sparkles in it!) to join Agent Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) new special level 7 team to investigate new powered people. Oh yeah Agent Coulson is alive but you all know this because he’s in every ad and poster with his own hashtag on Twitter.  Their first mission is to get Michael aka the Hooded Hero as he’s called in the press, but Skye gets to him first. See, Skye is part of this Internet group called The Rising Tide that I guess is like the Marvel version Anonymous that knows about SHIELD and all the crazy events that we’ve witnessed in Marvel movies. She wants to help him become a hero and he wants to stay hidden.

Good ol’ Coulson goes to Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), who seems to be some uber badass agent with a awesome comic book name who’s on desk duty and even though at first she declines, she ends up joining his group as the pilot and seems to be Coulson’s second in command of the team.  Then we meet the two tech heads of the team (Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge) who clearly are comedy relief in the Whedon way of constant witty banter and fast talk.  Coulson’s team finds and takes Skye into custody to get to find Michael. She doesn’t trust them and they find out about a secret project called "Centipede" from her.  At that time we see Michael has a thing on his forearm that looks like a Centipede that must be giving him his abilities. He tries to get his job back and when denied lashes out on the foreman there.

Michael goes to visit the woman he saved in the beginning and it seems she is in fact the doctor that gave him his powers and wants him to disappear since he is now a liability. Skye is now trying to help Coulson on figuring out what cause the building explosion by giving them audio from her van. Michael, going captain insano right now thinking he’s a hero knocks out May puts his son Ace in Skye’s van and asks her to drive and help him disappear. Coulson’s team finds out that centipede is in fact a new version of Extremis and that caused the explosion and soon Michael will explode if they don’t save him.

Coulson and crew catch up to Michael and Skye and try to stop Michael with force, which fails. The Doctor sends a mysterious guy to kill Michael that fails. Coulson talks Michael down as his team shoots him with special thing that stops the Extremis chemical reaction. Everyone is saved; Skye decides to become a SHIELD agent.

Did You Know:
The Iron Man 3 commercial was a clue for the episode because all the Extremis stuff in this episode is all explained in the film. It alsolets us know this takes place AFTER Iron Man 3.

Project Pegasus was mentioned. It’s that place at the end of the Thor movie and the beginning of the Avengers movie. Project Pegasus was big deal in Marvel Two-in-One starring The Thing but since he can't be in this stuff its other known character is the SHIELD Agent Wendell Vaughn aka Quasar. Maybe some space stuff to connect to Guardians of the Galaxy next year?

Hey guess who made up Extremis in Iron Man 3? It was A.I.M. – Advanced Idea Mechanics. It was kind of thrown in there and not wrapped up in IM3 and maybe now Agents of SHIELD is why.

It looks like the Michael character really isn’t a main character or connected to anything else from the comics.

The Centipede version of Extremis seems to be made from the different super powered members of the Avengers – Hulk, Captain America, and Thor (possibly)

Maria Hill and Dr. Streiten are holding a secret about Coulson’s return. He COULD be a Life Model Decoy with his brain patterns.

A character in the show mentioned the phrase "A Journey Into Mystery". That was the title where Thor made his first appearance and was his title for most his early adventures. Hey we also got a new Thor 2 commercial didn’t we! SYNERGY!!

Don’t think that Coulson's vintage car Lola is new, Nick Fury in the comics set in the 1960s stayed having dope flying cars. That’s a SHIELD staple.
