Cate Blanchett to Make 'The Dinner' Her Directorial Debut
Currently the toast of Hollywood thanks to her riveting performance in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett is looking to step behind the camera for the first time. While she's circled other potential projects in the past, Blanchett has decided to take the plunge and direct The Dinner, an adaptation of Herman Koch's acclaimed novel.
Released in 2009 and previously adapted into a Dutch film that just played at TIFF, the psychological thriller centers on two couples having dinner at a fancy restaurant. As the night goes on the courses are completed, the conversation turns ugly as they discuss a tragic incident involving their 15-year-old sons. Sounds like tense, uncomfortable material, similar to Roman Polanski's Carnage. Blanchett will get a lot of help in her first outing as Oren Moverman (The Messenger) will be adapting the script.
So far it doesn't look as if she'll star, but that could change at any time. Hopefully this gets in front of cameras soon and in theaters some time next year. [Deadline]
