First Clips from Diablo Cody's 'Paradise' Starring Julianne Hough

Diablo Cody has made her name as a screenwriter, dropping pop culture-laden witticisms throughout Juno, Jennifer's Body, and Young Adult, earning herself an Oscar win in the process. At least two of those films are well-regarded, one not so much (guess which one?), but whatever you think of Cody she has a distinctive "in your face" style of character building that one would think carries over to her directorial debut, Paradise. Does it? Well, check out a couple of clips and see for yourself.

The religious comedy stars Julianne Hough as the unfortunately-named Lamb Mannerheim, a gorgeous and devout woman living in a very conservative Montana town. After a horrible accident leaves her body and soul scarred, she decides to give up her faith and head to Las Vegas for a life of sin. There she meets a cheeky bartender (Russell Brand) and jaded nightclub dancer (Octavia Spencer) who introduce her to everything she's been missing, and along the way teach her a few life lessons.  These two clips offer up a couple of firsts for Lamb; her first alcoholic drink, which goes disastrously; and her first time hearing about the "magical negro" syndrome, which anybody who has ever seen The Legend of Bagger Vance knows exactly what that is.

Paradise has had an odd release pattern thus far, bypassing every festival and premiering a couple of months ago on DirecTV. It was then that I caught it and described it as "soft" and intentionally inoffensive, two things one normally doesn't associate with Cody.  Paradise will hit theaters on October 8th for those still willing to check it out.
