I've heard nothing but amazing things about the Penn & Teller documentary,
Tim's Vermeer, but have yet to actually sit down and take it in, missing it at a couple of festivals over the last few months. The subject matter is fascinating, though, especially for art lovers. The film follows inventor Tim Jenison and his attempts to duplicate the photo-realistic painting techniques of 17th century Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. Tim has no art skills; he's just a computer guy, and the discoveries he makes could shake the art world to its core.
The first trailer has been released even as its already showing in a few locations, and despite boasting the Penn & Teller label it's not a movie about magic. However, they're also known for debunking myths and revealing hidden truths, and there's certainly an aspect of that in play here.
Tim's Vermeer marks Teller's directorial debut, and opens wide January 31st 2014.
