Leigh Whannell to Make Directorial Debut on 'Insidious: Chapter 3'

The horror realm has been pretty good to screenwriter Leigh Whannell. With his oft-collaborator James Wan he created the Saw franchise, which ruled the box office for years. Then the duo teamed up again for Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, earning a hefty $260M combined on a shoestring budget. And it was the sequel's big $40M opening weekend that got a third film green lit, and now we know Whannell will be doing more than writing the script; he'll also be directing.

Whannell will make his directorial debut on Insidious: Chapter 3, taking over for Wan who is off directing Fast & Furious 7. As of now there are no details on the plot or if stars Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson will return for more adventures into the demon void known as The Further. Prior reports have suggested a new family will be the focus but nothing seems to be confirmed at this point. Whannell often puts himself in front of the camera, as well, playing one of the two bumbling ghostbusters that serve as Insidious' comic relief. He also recently starred in the Sundance horror-comedy, Cooties, alongside Elijah Wood.

Insidious: Chapter 3 already has a release date for April 3rd 2015.
