Two Clips from 'They Came Together' Starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler
There's a long history of Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, and David Wain providing big laughs together, and it's for that reason a lot of eyes are on They Came Together, a deliberately silly "anti rom-com" that tries to rip apart the genre. Rudd and Poehler play a completely cliched couple, like something ripped right out of You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. She's a candy store owner, he works for a huge conglomerate looking to destroy her business, until they meet cute and everything goes exactly as Hollywood would like it to. Or...not. This is a spoof, after all.
Does the film work? I was completely disappointed in it after a screening at Sundance, saying "Satire is a tough beast to tame, and while some of Wain's jokes are obviously meant to be terrible, surely not so many were designed to fall as flat as they do." But perhaps others will feel differently. Two clips have been released to give you a feel for what Wain is going for, including the basketball scene which is admittedly pretty funny.
Also starring Cobie Smulders, Ken Marino, Bill Hader, Ellie Kemper, Max Greenfield, Ed Helms, and Melanie Lynskey, They Came Together opens June 27th and will be available on VOD the same day.
