Meryl Streep to Play Opera Singer Maria Callas in Mike Nichols' HBO Biopic

After showing her vocal range (or lack thereof) in Mamma Mia!, Meryl Streep will be singing a few tunes in the Disney fairy tale musical, Into the Woods. But does she have what it takes to portray one of the great opera singers of all-time in Maria Callas? According to The Wrap  that's exactly what she's going to do, so now might be a good time for some singing classes.

Streep will reportedly reteam with director Mike Nichols on an HBO film adaptation of Terrence McNally's acclaimed stage play, Master Class, which centers on the master classes Callas taught at Juilliard in the early 1970s. Due to her incredible vocal register, Callas achieved great fame and lived a very dramatic life which included an affair with Aristotle Onassis. He would eventually dump her for Jacqueline Kennedy although rumors persisted Callas maintained a clandestine relationship with him.

This would be Nichols' first film since 2007's Charlie Wilson's War, and it's probably no surprise he's looking to Streep for his comeback effort. The two previously worked together on Silkwood, Heartburn, and Postcards from the Edge. Filming is to begin next January after Streep finishes up on Jonathan Demme's Ricki and the Flash.
