Dane DeHaan and Rooney Mara to Star in 1920s Musical 'Ziggy' from Baz Luhrmann Protege
Maybe it was the unexpected $350M success of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, but suddenly movie musicals are hot again. What we haven't seen is a project that attempts to recreate the era-eschewing style Luhrmann favors, but one of his proteges is about to change that. Diesel Schwarze, who worked with Luhrmann on Moulin Rouge! and La Boheme, is putting together a Jazz Age musical to be led by Dane DeHaan and Rooney Mara.
THR reports DeHaan and Mara, who don't really have much musical experience, are on board to star in Ziggy, a film which sounds pretty weird. Set in the roaring '20s, DeHaan plays a hunchback escape artist (!!!!) who falls in love with the fiance of a powerful media mogul. Say what? And like Luhrmann's films this one will feature a contemporary score, provided by Grammy-nominated producer Alex Da Kid, best known for working with Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and others.
It's a step in a new direction for DeHaan and Mara, neither having any experience in the musical genre. He was last seen in the zombie comedy Life After Beth and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, while Mara has been taking it easy this year with 2013's Her the last film she appeared in.
