Trippy First Trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Inherent Vice' starring Joaquin Phoenix

With Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice set to make its world premiere this weekend at the New York Film Festival, the hope was that all of the images released lately was leading up to some footage. After months of anxious waiting to see what Anderson could do with Thomas Pynchon's goofy detective novel, the first trailer has arrived and the director has chosen to completely embrace its weirdness.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as stoner private eye Doc Sportello trying to solve a missing persons case involving his ex-girlfriend's rich lover, but this isn't meant to be taken seriously in the least. Anderson has previously cited Airplane! and Top Secret! as influences and that tone is on full display, which is perfectly in keeping with Pynchon's book. What's interesting is how different this is from anything Anderson has done before, not just tonally but in terms of style. The editing is different, more chaotic than he's ever done before, and its fascinating to see him evolving in his seventh feature film.  We could be looking at the next The Big Lebowski here, which is probably not what what anybody would have expected to say about an Anderson movie.

Starring Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone and Joanna Newson, Inherent Vice opens December 12th.
