Ready for Another Purge? 'The Purge 3' Officially in the Works

After the $90M success of The Purge, Universal and Blumhouse rightfully leaped at the chance for a sequel. And so the low-budgeted thriller was followed earlier this year by the demonstrably superior The Purge: Anarchy, which performed even better by earning over $100M globally. And so it should come as no surprise that a third chance to show legalized violence is on the way.

Deadline reports that James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the first two movies, is back to pen The Purge 3. There's a chance he could direct this one, as well, but it doesn't seem to be nailed down just yet. Given what he's been able to accomplish so far by giving each film a distinct feel it would be surprising if DeMonaco doesn't take the helm.

So where does this one go? The premise is sound and probably won't get screwed with too much. Due to rising crime and unemployment, the U.S. government has allowed one day per year when all violent crime is legal. The first film was a home invasion thriller, the second a faster-paced revenge movie that expanded The Purge's scope. Rebel factions and corrupt government organizations have been introduced into the mix, and they'll likely play a role again.

While no date has been confirmed don't be surprised if The Purge 3 is in theaters next summer. These movies don't take long to make.
